Cool Tricks

Spending more time outside is an excellent source of exercise for your furry friend to enjoy. However, too much playtime outside in the heat can lead to heat exhaustion and dehydration–two major things you never want your dog to experience. So, to allow your pup a happy and healthy summer, here are a few tips on how to keep them cool:

  • Stay Hydrated: It’s so easy for your dog to become dehydrated during the summer, so be sure you’re constantly refilling your dog’s water bowl. Adding ice cubes to the water can help to keep your pup cool and happy.
  • Go Outside During the Cooler Hours: The best way to keep your dog happy and hot-free during the summer is to take them outside during the cooler hours of the day and evening. Typically, early mornings and evenings are the coolest hours of the day and a perfect compromise that’s sure to keep your pup content. Instead of venturing outside in the afternoon with the heat is on full blast, have some early morning or evening play time!
  • Frozen Treats: Nothing beats a tasty ice cream cone on a hot summer! Just as we enjoy this treat, you dog loves frozen treats too. Pet-friendly popsicles are a fantastic way to keep your dog cool from the inside out. Look up some popular pup-sicle recipes and select the one your furry friend will love the most.
  • Watch Their Paws: Surprisingly, not many owners are aware of this, but it’s important to keep your pup from walking on the road, and other surfaces like sand and stone. Although the padding on their paws can protect them, the heat that these surfaces absorb is far too hot for your dog’s paws. A great rule of thumb is this: if it’s too hot for your hand or foot, then it’s too hot for theirs too. So, if you have to walk them during the afternoon, do your best to keep them off of these hot surfaces. To remedy this problem, many pet care companies sell little booties you can put on your pup’s paws.
  • Watch Humidity Levels: Pay close attention to the humidity levels throughout the week. When it’s humid, your pup has a harder time keeping themselves cool due to their inability to pant enough. If the humidity levels are going to be high, keep your furry friend inside.

By keeping these helpful tips in mind, you can guarantee that you and your dog will have a fun and healthy summer ahead.
